Not until yesterday did I feel a sense that fall is approaching. This seasons are subdued here at the beach. The evening comes earlier and the nights and mornings colder. Fall! I realized Stella has but ONE pair of closed toe shoes! Time to do a bit of shopping? Putting away things like this sweet romper and sandals in exchange for ruffled hoodies and fringed boots will be happening very soon. Miss Stella has already been walking about the house in my socks and shoes so fall dressing should be right up her alley.

Parts Unknown
We spend a lot of time at a bitty beach along the PCH. There is no sign or parking lot. No restrooms, snack shack or beach volleyball, just a concrete staircase down to the sand and a call box. Mr. calls it Bass Rock Beach because an old(er) surfing local told him that's what he thinks it's called. Except that I have never seen any surfers there, just a few fishermen once in a while. I can't seem to find that name, Bass Rock, anywhere on a map but there are rocks and fish! Regardless it has been a pretty sweet spot for us these past few months, to catch the sunset, get our feet wet (or our entire body) and study tide pools and sea creatures clinging to the rocks. After a full day yesterday of Farmers Markets, errands, friends and food we stopped at our unknown beach in hopes of spotting a starfish, sea anemone or crab. But the current had changed, bringing tons of new sand to the beach covering lots of what was exposed rock. There were no tide pools and no creatures to study but lots of sandy beach and no people. So we ran, got silly, sandy and yes a little wet too. With the sun sinking and the air turning cool we had to keep moving to stay warm. Wrapped in beach towels we didn't stay long but I'm so glad we stopped.
Wordless Wednesday - Driftwood
Still not wanting to go past his knees in the water, JQ decided to collect small pieces of driftwood instead. Also are there any Jim Gaffigan fans out there that have heard his joke about swim shirts? I had to smile at these photos of JQ in his "swim shirt". If you haven't caught Gaffigan's show check out Mr. Universe. Seriously funny stuff. He jokes about life as a parent, cosleeping, homebirthing...all that stuff that I can relate to. Good for a much needed laugh!
What A Babe
This little Miss is so much cooler than me. She put her sparkling shades on, plopped down in the sand and started tapping away at the keys. So funny and so flipping cute. I am not sure what gave her the idea cause I certainly don't use my laptop at the beach. And no matter how much I try we all arrive home with a layer of sand on everything.
And just so you know Stella did this for all of two minutes and then she started taking her clothes off and running straight into the surf. Crazy bunny that she is! I've got to be quick on my feet, always ready to drop what I am doing and rescue one of my sweet babes from... them self.

Getting Away
I don't expect we will make a habit of spending our anniversary weekends away with the babies in tow. However, this past weekend that is exactly what we did and it seemed to work out. A warm, mellow beach and a lot of room service. As for relaxation? Not so much. Funny but we usually return from weekend trips exhausted. Still. I wouldn't have skipped it!
We stayed at The Dream Inn in Santa Cruz. It was very hip. I would describe it as a retro modern surf motel, if there is such a thing. Surfer Magazines and bean bags in the room, hot chocolate and a snack basket in our room upon arrival. My kind of place. My brother in law prepared us fresh abalone and enchiladas for our anniversary and the babies played in (and ate 'Stellita') the sand. It was the perfect little getaway.
A Happy Ending & Rough Beginning
We said so long to 2010 with an impromptu trip to the central and southern California coast and greeted the new year with a quick trip into the city of Los Angeles.
We woke New Years Eve at the beach to clear skies and the sun shining. A beautiful ending to a long, busy, and adventurous year.
The new year started off with a feverish toddler, a shopping spree and comida authentica. Not all bad but my poor little man is still very ill and seems to have shared his sickness with Stella. Having two sick babies is surely my first test of the year but with so much to look forward to this month things will certainly only get better.Una Buena Aventura
My husband has been ill off and on now for more than a month. After multiple tests, scans, labs y mas we still do not know what is wrong but are hopeful to have a resolution soon. We thought he was well enough to take a quick trip to Los Angeles so that his family could meet Miss Stella but after just a day we decided to turn back and head home. It is about an eight hour drive and we knew we had to make regular stops to let Joaquin run and stretch and so that I could nurse the baby. We decided to take "El Camino Real" north (IE HWY 1) along the ocean for a few reasons. I had desperately wanted to visit the ocean at some point during our trip south and seeing as I would be the one driving....
We stopped just outside Ventura, our old stomping ground and somewhere I am still totally in love with. Joaquin ran and played for a bit. Henry got some fresh air and I introduced Stella to the beach!
Because it was already late afternoon when we left L.A. we made it as far as Pismo Beach and ended up staying in a fabulous beach side resort there for the night. So although my husband was/is ill I think he was able to enjoy himself a little or at least be pleased that the babies and I were not totally bummed about cutting our trip short.
More Of The Beach
We LOVE the ocean and beach so I am thrilled that we can spend time so close to it right now. Because of my husbands work we have a small place in the City. So it is a relatively short drive to Santa Cruz and Rich, Joaquin and Stella's Uncle. Lucky for us he was able to take the day off and spend it with us on the beach (which is where he works anyway). We relaxed, played, ate some sand (well, Joaquin did) chatted and saved a man and a handful of swimmers from a runaway catamaran (long story). It was the perfect day that ended too soon. Here are a few photos from last weekends visit. Oh and I was there too, just behind the camera as usual.
Santa Cruz and The Cabrillo HWY
We spent the past weekend near the ocean and stopped in on Richie, my husbands brother. He was working so we decided to hang out at his office....The Santa Cruz beach. Yeah...life is rough. It turned out to be a beautiful day and although short, we had a nice visit. On our way back to Emeryville we decided to take the Cabrillo Highway along the coast. So beautiful. Parts of it remind me of or home in Ventura and the drive from Santa Monica. Anyway it was a lovely day...makes me miss Ventura.

RINCON
As I have mentioned before we recently took a trip south to our old home, Ventura. We spent a week next to the ocean and on the beach. The weather was beautiful and we so many old friends came by to visit.
Joaquin loved the sand and the water. We played for ours until we were all tuckered out. Naps in the afternoon and hit the beach again! I wouldnt be surprised if we ended up living next to the ocean again. We all seem to love it so much.

El Mar
This past weekend was Joaquin's first trip to the ocean. Of course he loved it as much as I thought he would and his uncle Richie loved him as much as I thought he would. Can you believe he hadn't seen Joaquin yet! Unlucky for us my camera was acting funny and the GREAT picture I got of Richie holding Joaquin was over exposed. arrrgh! But here it is anyway....(we miss you Rich!)
The ocean has always been a love of mine. I played in it as a child and play in it still. I have lived by the ocean and far from it. My happiest memories are near the ocean or in it. As soon as Keeners put his little toes in the sand the smile started. He wouldnt look up after that,...just stared at his toes as he moved his feet around in the sand. He smiled and screamed at the ocean and stuck his arms out in excitment.
He is as I have mentioned before, a water baby. My brother in Law lives five blocks from the beach in Santa Cruz and is enjoying every minute. He too is a fish and absolutely loves that Joaquin seems to be as well at six months old. :) Rich will probably be the one to show him how to surf and body board and I really hope he does. Joaquin and his uncle Richie will be fish together, in the sea...
Even though the time fly by way too fast we enjoyed it very, very much. After a day at the beach we head north on the Cabrillo Highway to Pacifica. Beautiful drive along the water especially with the fog rolling in.
WOW.
We picked this spot because it left only a 30 minute drive into San Francisco the following morning were my husband would be playing baseball in Golden Gate Park. Our room had a fantastic view of the ocean and the hillside and in the morning we could hardly eat our breakfast because we were watching dolphins and whales right off the shore. Two whales were playing and eating some 100 yards of the beach, back and forth right in front of the restaurant. Then a bit later a few dolphins showed up and starting playing in the surf. It was hard to pack up and head into the city but was an amazing start to the day. I know that Joaquin may not remember this first trip to the ocean however I will remember. I will remember this trip and the many more to come. My husband and I are already planning a trip to Pacifica again and it wont be to soon!
